Obituary for William Clayton Watt

William Clayton Watt
William “Clayton” Watt 1927 – 2016
In honour of our father Clayton, we would like to share a celebration of his life. Clayton was born to Arnold & Olive Watt, December 24, 1927 in Vilna, AB. He spent his early years in Lac la Biche and enjoyed becoming a Military Cadet in that area. His family moved to Cold Lake in December 1942 when his father was transferred with the Alberta Forestry Service. Clayton became qualified to be a Cadet Instructor in the Cold Lake Cadet Corps in 1946. Dad loved to tease and play pranks which he never did outgrow over the years. As a young man, he ventured to Athabasca where he would meet the girl of his dreams while building the Athabasca Bridge. He married Ilene Margaret Harps on March 17, 1951 and returned with his new bride to the Cold Lake area. They settled for a time in Frog Lake where they operated the family mink ranch. They raised their four children: Dwayne, Thelma, Charlotte and Tammy in Cold Lake while making their living with his gravel truck and lumber planing businesses as well as hobby farming. Dad also enjoyed being a local volunteer firefighter and had a great passion for hunting and fishing. He loved homemade smoked fish or meats and always kept a wad of snuff in his bottom lip to which he referred to as his dessert. By the way, that was the same location to keep worms warm when ice fishing. At least, that is what he convinced the grandchildren to believe! Dad was a very laid back kind of character and many people can recollect sitting around Watt’s kitchen table swapping stories with a pot of coffee always on the go. He always enjoyed company stopping by. In his later years, he appreciated the close friendships he gained while living at the Points West Living facility.
Clayton is loved and forever remembered by his children: Dwayne (Melanie) Watt of Cold Lake, AB, Thelma (John) Lapointe of Cold Lake, AB, Charlotte (Charlie) Kilcup of Cold Lake, AB, Tammy (Denis) Letellier of Winnipeg, MN; grandchildren: Olivia (Gordon) Clarke, Mike (Cristie) Watt, Daniel (Jessica) Watt, Michelle (Dan) Bryson, Lise (Danny) Poirier, Amanda (Kevin) Walters, Andrew (Janice) Lapointe, Nathan (Shannon) Kilcup, Melissa (Brian) Bulley, Alexandria & Courtney Letellier; 16 great-grandchildren; sister: Shirley Barnes and numerous extended family and friends. Clayton was predeceased by his wife: Ilene Watt in 1995; parents: Arnold & Olive Watt; two sisters: Al Luciak, Claudia Vasseur.
Dad passed peacefully at the Bonnyville Health Care Centre on November 24, 2016 at 88 years old. At his request there was to be no funeral. Final resting place will take place at a later date.
As Dad often said in his farewells, “Don’t get lost now!” and “Don’t take any wooden nickels!”
