Obituary for
Cecile Mercier
Cecile Mercier (nee Meunier) passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 18, 2017 at the age of 90, from Alzheimer’s. Her husband Lucien, brother Dick, and sister Lil Mageau predeceased her. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Denis and Roger, their five grandchildren, seven great grand children, her sister Ella and brother Rolland. Cecile was born on Feb, 7, 1926 in Therien, Alberta where her family owned A.G. Meunier General Merchant & Post Office, launching her lifelong career in retail. After she finished high school, while living with the nuns at the St. Paul convent, she moved to Bonnyville working at Brosseau’s and Vallée Department Stores. During this time she met and married Lou, and gave birth to her sons. In the early 60’s the family moved to Edmonton, where she managed Tracy’s and McCarthur’s. Shortly afterwards, the family moved to Grande Prairie, where Cecile spent 25 years managing five departments for the Hudson’s Bay. She loved her work but never let in get in the way of making time for her family. During the retirement years, Cecile moved to Edmonton when she and Lou separated. Later they reunited in Edmonton followed by a move back to their roots with a move to the Bonnyville Lodge. The last 6 ½ years of her life were spent in Evergreen Lodge in Calgary, closer to her sons Roger and Denis, and grandchildren. Cecile had a joyful, energetic personality and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and extended family. She was always genuinely interested in pleasing others. In her spare time, she loved to sew clothes and make crafts for her family. She enjoyed going for drives and never missed a chance to travel and reunite with her extended family or hometown friends. She remained energetic in her retirement years, joining social clubs, church choirs and hunting garage sales for craft materials to make decorative angels and Crybaby dolls for family and to sell thorough merchants in West Edmonton Mall. She found great pleasure in shopping the Bay using her hard earned staff discount to purchase presents for her children and extended family – always thinking of ways to please others. A funeral service and luncheon will be held on January 28 at 11:00 am at the South Calgary Funeral Center at 12700 Macleod Trail South. A graveside service will be held at the St. Louis Roman Catholic Church Cemetery, 55 Street and 49 Avenue Bonnyville, Alberta on January 30 at 11:00 am with a luncheon to follow at the Neighborhood Inn.
