This picture speaks so well of Mom R. You can see her hands clasped; that may be from the excitement of seeing the deer, or in prayer, or perhaps both. She knew the sink well; not just because of the view, but because she cared to keep things clean.
She loved looking out this window, seeing the wildlife that would come by. The quarter-section was well-known for its deer and birds (which they fed), as well as other wild-life, including bears. She was fiercely independent, and stayed on the quarter section long beyond “reasonable.” Eventually, though, she accepted it was time to move to town. The last night she and my brother-in-law, Robert, stayed at the house, Robert was woken up by a strange grumbling sound—looking out the window, he saw two bears, sitting on the front deck, in ‘conversation’.
Mom R’s focus was not on herself; she didn’t like the attention (and she didn’t like to face the camera). She loved the outdoors, and took great delight when she spotted lady-slippers or tiger lilies growing in the bush on the property. She also loved to be behind the steering wheel (oh my! How she could drive, and so many trips in one day!). And she enjoyed meeting up with friends (especially at the A&W).
When I think of Mom R, her favorite scripture for family and friends rings in my ears:
“The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26
Good-bye, Mom. I am sad you are gone, but I rejoice that you are no longer in your failing body and are now with Jesus. I’m sure there is a twinkle of wonder in your eye, and laughter, as you survey your home.
God is good.
